I've alwayz depended on the kindness of Strangers

Been wanting to write ‘bout a couple of movies I’ve watched over last few weekends and the moment has finally arrived –(in the order that they have been viewed)
  • Rear Window

  • The Apartment

  • A Clockwork Orange and

  • A Streetcar Named Desire

Rear Window is a very different Hitchcock movie – there is no denouement whatsoever but the dialogues were quite entertaining esp. those of Lisa and Jeff… like this one :
        Jeff: When am I going to see you again?
        Lisa: [angry] Not for a long time...
              [softening]
        Lisa: at least not until tomorrow night.

The Apartment was a witty movie and quite entertaining but I somehow did not like the happy ending of the movie – my morbid self would have enjoyed it better had it been sad.

And what do I say ‘bout the Clockwork Orange – scandalous stuff but definitely food for thought. Here I must mention that I did not feel even an ounce of remorse for Alex –I thought he deserved every bit of the punishment meted out to him.

Aha! So I come to the best at the last –A Streetcar Named Desire – having read the play long back I was so eager to watch this movie and I loved every bit of it.
It has found a special niche in my list of favorite movies (not to forget mentioning the special place in my heart reserved for Marlon Brando). Vivien Leigh looked every bit of Blanche Dubois (I believe she had that paranoia even in her real life).
And what amazing dialogues, boy! Each of them ought to be soldered onto your head:

Stanley Kowalski: (refusing to acknowledge Blance’s beauty) I never met a dame yet that didn't know if she was good-looking or not without being told, and there's some of them that give themselves credit for more than they've got.

Blanche DuBois: I don't want realism. I want magic! Yes, yes, magic. I try to give that to people. I do misrepresent things. I don't tell truths. I tell what ought to be truth.

Blanche DuBois: Straight? What's 'straight'? A line can be straight, or a street. But the heart of a human being?

Stanley Kowalski: You know what luck is? Luck is believing you're lucky, that's all... To hold a front position in this rat race, you've got to believe you are lucky

And the most touching one of them all

Blanche DuBois: I have always depended on the kindness of strangers…..

Was passing ...stopped by seeing Clockwork Orange. If you have read the novel, it ends on a different note Alex, contemplating! Sadly Kubrick couldn't end it that way!
What's it going to be then, eh ?

@RT
However I din like Vivien Leigh in GWTW too much (it clashed with my mental image of Scarlett O'Hara) but in 'Streetcar ...' she really deserved the Oscar she'd won.

@Raul
yup the very same movie i'd mentioned, yaa Indulge urself at naturals (n dont forget to pick the movie)

@Venus
I havent read the book, now that I've watched the movie I dont think I wud pick it up either but was wondering y did Kubrick change the ending??

@Sujit
Except perhaps 'The Apartment',which you can give a miss, I would reco' to watch atleast one of the movies.

@zombiee
'Clockwork...' seems to be in the list of favorites for many... Amelie is one more long time pending in mi list ,wud try to catch it this weekend.

I have always depended on my fellow bloggers. :-)

I don' think he changed the ending, I believe the original book had an extra chapter which was edited in the American edition and Kubrick followed the american version, so much Trivia :p

>>I somehow did not like the happy ending of the movie

Even after many years after being a kid, I wouldn't want to watch a movie that doesnot have a happy ending.
I used to ask people if the movie has a happy ending, other wise I wouldn't go. There were quite list popular movies that way. Its all changed now hopefully. Wait! is this a sad ending for this comment..hmm!!

ET? I thought ET was happy ending.Otherwise the whole family would go bankrupt buying on anti-wrinkle creams for that thing. That would be a sad ending. ain't it.

>>What changed?

With the invasion of irritating non-acting creeps like Tushaar, Ash, Salman, I really prefer to see them dying at the end. *evil grin*

Saw each of these movies and I would have placed them into the same order you have!
I agree about Alex from A Clockwork Orange - but man oh man, what a punishment that was!

As to Streetcar, not enough wonderful things can be said about that movie.

That line of Blanche's about "tell what ought to be the truth" ... that's a killer! Excellent watching choices Swathi!

Swathi Sambhani aka Chimera said...

Anumita,
Thanks for the wishes, n yaa the new post is on itz way ...

Vicky,
Hope u had a wonderful Diwali and thanks a ton for the wishes.

Gvenum,
did u say that 'thing'???? oh! how can u be so cruel?
ET had such a bitter sweet ending that I found my dress wet with tears (so what if i was in my 1st std!)

@'with the invasion of non-acting....' well, the sad thing is that they don't seem to die

Sujit,
Thanks and Wish u the same

T.Fairy,
Thanks dear and hope u had a 'blast' on Diwali

W.Hag
